Directing
James also has extensive experience as a director, dramaturg and assistant director.
Most recently, James served as Assistant to Associate Director Karen Johnson Mortimer on the Australian tour of 9 to 5 The Musical. This position was created by the producers of the show to enable James to train in all aspects of being a Resident Director, from taking notes in rehearsals and performances, attending weekly scheduling meetings and production meetings during the technical rehearsal periods of the tour. He was also involved in rehearsing new cast members and swings/understudies.
He was one of the founding Artistic Directors of Bar'd Work, an entertainment company that created short, punchy and lively productions of Shakespeare plays to be performed in pubs and other unique venues around Sydney and Melbourne. He was responsible for the casting process, as well as dramaturgy and script editing, and co-directed the company's hugely successful first production, Much Ado About Nothing.
He also worked as Assistant Director on the Australian premiere of Will Eno's play Middletown for Red Stitch Actor's Theatre, and is regularly employed by the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama to help facilitate their Australian auditions.
